Software Update
A couple of weeks ago, Apple started offering Safari 3.1 via it’s Software Update tool to users even though they did not have Safari already installed (basically it offered to install new software).
Many people complained (mostly Mozilla - go figure). While I agree that they should have either divided it up or left it unchecked as a benefit to consumers, it really was no big deal. It is after all just a browser. It’s not like they sneaked it onto your system and made it the default item (to most users it would have been just one more icon in a sea of squarish colors). The Angry Drunk probably says it best even though John Gruber points out the correct way.
This brings us to today. Apple has updated the Software Update tool and separates new software and updates.
Does this end it? No. Asa Dotzler (from Mozilla - again, go figure) has to go on complaining because the checkbox is still on by default.
I will leave it to The Angry Drunk to finish this one off.
