Software Update

A couple of weeks ago, Apple started offering Safari 3.1 via it’s Software Update tool to users even though they did not have Safari already installed (basically it offered to install new software).

Many people complained (mostly Mozilla - go figure). While I agree that they should have either divided it up or left it unchecked as a benefit to consumers, it really was no big deal. It is after all just a browser. It’s not like they sneaked it onto your system and made it the default item (to most users it would have been just one more icon in a sea of squarish colors). The Angry Drunk probably says it best even though John Gruber points out the correct way.

This brings us to today. Apple has updated the Software Update tool and separates new software and updates.

Does this end it? No. Asa Dotzler (from Mozilla - again, go figure) has to go on complaining because the checkbox is still on by default.

I will leave it to The Angry Drunk to finish this one off.

Now, this is what I call a project. Love the fact that it’s a promo piece for the new game.

Can’t wait.

Enough said.

Hell House

Hell House” by Richard Matheson is an excellent read. While it is a horror novel (and does contain a bit of both adult matter and grotesque visual descriptions from time to time - so don’t read if you don’t approve), it is a shining example of the genre.

I will say that I have warmed up to Matheson’s works with this novel. “I am Legend” is okay (did not age well though) even though it had a great theme and plot (if you have seen the movie and not read the book, you’ve done yourself a disservice - read the original, the idea behind it is great and the movie kills it). Coming from “I am Legend” to “Hell House” is a big leap. Although, I believe this has more to do with the technological levels and the amount dealt with in the books (”I am Legend” is nearly a straight Sci-fi novel (and was originally marked as such), but really, really outdated in it’s science - it was written in the 50s after all).

Oh, and a note of warning. “Hell House” is not a mystery novel, so don’t try to solve the mystery of Hell House before the end, you will only hurt yourself. Instead, sit back and enjoy.

Now, back to work, and then off to “Salem’s Lot”.

* NOTE: I have used quotes instead of underlining due to technical issues and reader perception. All material expressed here within quotes are novels not short stories.

And another goes…

So, it looks like another great has left the building. Actor Charlton Heston has passed away.

I think I will try and find Omega Man and watch that tonight. Never actually seen it before. Good a time as any I think.
